Florida Panthers to Host “Goal of a Lifetime” Contest

The Florida Panthers announced today the club’s plans for their “Goal of a Lifetime” contest that will give one lucky Panthers' fan the opportunity to sign a one-day amateur try-out and serve as Florida’s back-up practice goalie for a day.

“We are very excited to launch this contest and expect a great turnout for this ultimate fan experience,” said Florida Panthers Executive Chairman Peter Luukko. “This contest provides our hockey community with the opportunity to earn a chance to skate with the Panthers and serve as the team’s back-up practice goalie for a day.”
The “Goal of a Lifetime” contest is open to all men and women goaltenders (must be 18-years-old or older). All goaltenders are asked to submit their playing resume to FloridaPanthers.com/backupgoalie. After reviewing the resumes, a select group of goaltenders will participate in an on-ice try-out that will take place on Monday, March 16, at 4 p.m. at BB&T Center. Panthers Goaltending Coach Robb Tallas and select Panthers Alumni will oversee the try-outs.

Two finalists will be selected from the try-outs and will be invited to compete in a shootout that will feature Panthers Alumni during the first intermission of Florida’s game against Montreal on March 17. The goaltender with the best performance in the shootout will be selected as the Panthers’ back-up practice goalie and will sign a one-day amateur try-out with the team.

“We look forward to welcoming goaltenders from across South Florida to this open try-out,” said Tallas. “It promises to be a once in a lifetime experience for the goaltender who is selected to serve as our team’s back-up practice goalie for a day.”

Additionally, the winning goaltender will receive two complimentary tickets for each home game remaining in the 2014-2015 regular season, a team-signed jersey and will be featured on Fox Sports Florida during an intermission segment.

Raimo Summanen, Avangard Omsk Head Coach heating up to the refs

Avangard Omsk won the Barys Astana in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, 4-3 and tied the match wins on the play-off series to 2-2.

The show was stolen by the Omsk coach Raimo Summanen who completely lost his temper. Summanen heated up to refs in the first period. He took a players stick and waved it threateningly in the direction of the referees. Summanen obviously wanted to demonstrate to the refs how the stick should not be used.

This is not the first time in this season, when Summanen has lost his temper. In the autumn, he challenged Moscow Dynamo coach Harijs VĪTOLIŅŠ to brawl in a locker room hallway. Then he received 5,000€ in fines.

Hilary Knight working with 'Like A Girl' campaign to tear down stereotypes

Hilary Knight was one of an estimated 114 million-plus people in America watching Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1. And like many of those people, Knight was tuned in when Always aired its #LikeAGirl ad, part of its campaign to help instill confidence in young girls and tear down stereotypes.

For Knight, joining in was a logical next step.
"It was sort of a no-brainer to get involved with the campaign," Knight told NHL.com. "When I was growing up, 'play like a girl' or 'you shoot like a girl,' whatever it is, sort of had a negative connotation to it.
"After seeing the Super Bowl for the first Always 'Like A Girl' campaign, it really changed my view on the 'like a girl' phrase, and the tagline that they're using now."

Knight is one the most accomplished female hockey players on the planet. She was a member of the 2014 U.S. Olympic team that won a silver medal in Sochi. But playing a male-dominated sport, as she described it, Knight said she has faced plenty of hurdles and now wants to help empower girls of any age hoping to play hockey, or simply be there for anyone in need of a female role model.

"I worked really hard to get to this level, and part of the responsibilities of the job is to give back and make sure you're accessible to the kids, because you remember when you were in their shoes and watching, for me, Cammi Granato and Angela Ruggiero when I was growing up," said Knight.

When Knight and the United States lost 3-2 in overtime to Canada in the gold-medal game, it showcased the skill level and entertainment value that women's hockey offers. The game also averaged 4.9 million viewers on its NBC broadcast. For those unfamiliar with women's hockey, or those who simply assume it isn't fun to watch, Knight said those kinds of games can go a long way.

"That's a stereotype and stigma that I fight daily, and through this campaign it helps obviously broaden the spectrum of women's hockey, but also empowers people," Knight said. "It's just part of the growth of the sport."
Knight was featured in Always' latest video, "#LikeAGirl -- Stronger Together," which was released Monday. In it, Knight skates into a shot before looking at the camera and saying, "I shoot like a girl." Part of the campaign is reversing the meaning of that saying and using it to promote confidence.

"It's cool because originally, only 19 percent of people thought 'like a girl' was a good phrase," Knight said. "And now 72 percent from the Super Bowl ad think it's a great phrase. It's interesting how just in a short amount of a time a simple phrase has changed from something that was stereotypical and negative to something that's empowering.
"People are really passionate and following in suit, and it's gaining momentum."

Chris Henderickson met T.J. Oshie as part of his Make-A-Wish grant.
Ever since St. Louis Blues player and 2014 Olympian T.J. Oshie played for the University of North Dakota, 14-year-old Chris Hendrickson has cheered him on. Hendrickson, who hails from North Dakota, has Morquio syndrome and stopped growing when he was just 4 years old because the condition causes his cells to become deformed. Through the Make-A-Wish program, Hendrickson got to meet his hero, play hockey with him, attend a Blues’ game, go into the locker room, fist-bump the players as they took the ice, sit in the broadcast booth, and even ride the Zamboni.
